“If you look at pay settlements overall, over the last 12 months they are
about three and a half per cent. They are consistently within our inflation
target. I have made it very clear that we cannot get ourselves into a position
where we allow inflation to take hold because we get into inflationary pay
rises. That would be disastrous, not just for the country but for each and
every one of us.”

Chancellor, Alistair Darling, interviewed on BBC radio, warning employees
not to press for pay settlements above the rate of inflation.
